Piano Recycling and Upcycling

Pianos last a very long time when they’re regularly serviced and repaired and there’s a lot that can be done to restore a piano even if it has been left neglected for a while. However, if a piano reaches the point of no return, you’ll need to consider a more drastic approach. Here are some fantastic upcycling projects we’ve come across where pianos have been given a wonderful and creative new lease of life.

The Grand Piano Bookcase

Grand Piano Bookshelf

An ambitious project which we’ve received links to a few times; with the case left in tact and put on its side, creative carpentry has turned this grand piano into a really quite wonderful bookshelf.  The entire product is made from the original piano, less the casters and some additional screws. Its makers tell us on Etsy that this was originally a Howard, product of Baldwin, Baby Grand Piano serial #71053 circa 1913.

Upright Piano Writing Desk

Greenwood Bay have made a beautiful writing desk from an upright piano. By leaving the piano frame and strings in tact, it has a striking presence, although we think we’d soon become distracted by hitting and plucking the strings.

The Piano Tool Orgraniser

This piano tool organiser (featured on Core 77) may be a little more utilitarian than beautiful but it particularly appeals to our piano restoration team. I suspect we may see something similar in our piano workshop one day soon.

We love all of the above, but we don’t all have the carpentry skills  – or the space! –  to repurpose a large piano as another piece of furniture in our homes. If you have a piano in need of some love and attention, get in touch to find out how we  can repair or restore it, or find what we can do to recycle your piano.
