‘An upright piano with a grand piano feel’
Things have been getting busy here at The Piano Shop Bath with the new Sheet Music Room almost ready, lots of bespoke painted pianos arriving, and the new Haessler and Blüthner models making their appearances. In the midst of these exciting new developments it seemed important to acknowledge the importance of some of the flagship models we always have in our showroom, so here we take a closer look at the Yamaha U3 from 2005 that recently came in. The Yamaha upright pianos are consistently good and here is another Yamaha U3 that is definitely worth a look.
In classic polished ebony with brass detailing, this handsome Yamaha piano stands at 130 cm ( 51 inches ) tall. The 2005 U3 model benefits from a longer music desk and soft-fall closing mechanism, which helps prevent the lid slamming shut. The height gives this upright piano a very substantial presence that feels welcoming to sit with. As well as its aesthetic strength, the height of the U3 gives it real acoustic weight. The longer bass strings (longer than some grand piano bass strings) produce a resonant, pleasing growl, while the larger soundboard creates both volume and depth of tone.
Because this U3 model was made after 2002 it has 5 back posts rather than 4, which provide very good stability and build quality. Post 2002 U3s also benefit from the updated method of soundboard fitting called ‘floating attachment’ fitting. This helps the soundboard to vibrate more freely thus improving the depth of tone in the bass and mid range notes. When compared to an older U3 (though an older U3 is still a very good piano) you can hear the 2005 Yamaha U3 produces a beautiful warm, clear tone, this is a testament to Yamahas on-going commitment to building world-class upright pianos.
There really can be no doubt that this upright piano from Yamaha is a high-quality instrument. We would recommend this for anyone in search of a high-end upright piano, or an upright that is comparable to a grand piano in terms of touch and tone. For the discerning pianist looking for a piano that will provide decades of service, we would suggest the Yamaha U3 from 2005 is sure to be a good investment.
