The Broadwood lineage is distinguished and well established. John Broadwood & Sons began producing pianos in 1808 and holds a Royal Warrant. As well as supplying numerous instruments to members of the royal family over the centuries, John Broadwood & Sons pianos have also been appreciated by many great composers. Broadwood pianos have been played by Chopin, Haydn, and perhaps most famously Beethoven, who kept a Broadwood piano his whole life.

Reviewing any restored piano is always interesting as restored pianos seem to posses their very own distinctive characters and personalities. This restored 1930s John Broadwood upright is no exception and has huge personality. Produced in England during the 1930s by the world’s oldest piano manufacturers this diminuitive upright piano comes with plenty of history and charm. The beautiful Farrow and Ball painted cabinet ensures it has stage presence but this restored upright piano doesn’t just look good, it also plays very nicely.
Tone and Touch
The action on this piano is nicely balanced and responsive, allowing for full expression and good dynamic range. The tone is well rounded and warm and does say something about the quality of its production, particularly pleasing to hear are the clear, strong tones of the treble. This upright piano would take you easily to Grade 7 standard in great style. More advanced pianists might be better suited to a higher level upright piano, like the Kawai k300 or kawai k500, when the repertoire demands a more exacting instrument. For the rest of us, this John Broadwood painted piano has a lot to recommend it, not only is it eye catching and unique, it plays very well too.
