The Piano Shop Bath is delighted to present ‘Joyful Sound’, a sculptural installation in our showroom windows by Julieann Worrall Hood.
The installation consists of over 1000 vintage piano keys that were saved and recycled from pianos beyond renovation. It beautifully captures the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of a piano action; piano actions contain in the region of 6,000 parts that all need to be working harmoniously together before a single piano string can be struck. ‘Joyful Sound’ also playfully deconstructs a part of the piano which remains a mystery for many casual players, as the internal mechanics of a piano is usually left to the careful guidance of a good piano technician.

In addition to ‘Joyful Sound’, Julieann has made three further pieces for the wall that are also on display and available for sale. ‘Undulation’ consists of a complete set of antique keys sculpted into a gravity defying gentle wave. The other two wall pieces, ‘Staccato 1 and 2’, are a more abstract interpretation of music using combinations of antique piano keys.

Julieann is a sculptor based in Wiltshire. Last year she created a series of woven rattan forms for the Chanel Christmas displays in London, Manchester and Dublin and has work in public and private collections nationally and internationally.
