Musical Truth
‘The only truth is music’
Jack Kerouac

Golden Pout
‘I merely took the energy it takes to pout and wrote some blues’
Duke Ellington
60cm wide x 30cm tall, gold and blue shot silk dupion with laser cut crimson stitched letters
This lantern takes the form of musical notation, like a large, squished quaver, glowing gold and blue and deep crimson. Smoky, like good jazz.
Dancing Orange
‘Writing about music is like dancing about architecture’
Frank Zappa
60cm tall x 30cm deep, shot silk dupion with laser cut and stitched letters.

Time and Space
Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time’
Jean Michel Basquiat
50cm diameter, shot silk dupion with laser cut and embroidered details.
Thinking in four dimensions we consider the many layers of experience given us through our senses. Experience texture, colour, form, movement, space and time with this gorgeous gold and blue shot silk lantern. The letters are cut from orange and crimson shot silk with crimson embroidery, adding additional layers of complexity to this unique, functional artwork.
Right Notes Orange
‘I’m playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order’
Eric Morecambe
60cm diameter, shot silk, laser cut and stitched
This large, glowing lantern is made out of a beautiful orange silk with a shot of red silk woven through it so that the colour morphs when seen from different angles. The message may be humorous but it also touches on an essential truth about art, music, creativity and life. In order to create you have to mix things up and make unexpected connections.
Ragtime Ball
40cm diameter shot silk dupion sculptural lantern, multiple colours, on a handmade rattan frame.
This lantern was created in the spirit of sustainability, inspired by traditional textile methods the world over that use fabric scraps to make functional objects of beauty. The silk fragments left over from making the graffiti lanterns were saved up and woven through this hand-made rattan frame, making a lantern that throws wonderful cascades of twinkling light.
Rainbow Improvisation
60cm tall x 30 cm deep, rainbow coloured shot silk dupion lantern on a handmade rattan frame.
For those who love colour and movement this eccentrically woven lantern brings together all of the hues and ideas from the whole installation in one final, improvisational piece. The weaving leaves spaces for light to be cast onto surrounding surfaces, reminding us of the importance of the spaces in between things, moments and notes.
The Artists
is a Bristol based illustrator, muralist, graffiti and Virtual Reality artist. Intricately patterned and highly colourful dinosaurs, combined with architecture, are a common theme of his designs. Andy is originally from Bath and was educated at Bournemouth Art College where he studied Animation. He has produced work for Blender magazine, Russian design magazine Interni and The Guardian newspaper and was delighted to create the painted Graffiti Piano for the Piano Shop and have his work on display in his home city.
The Graffiti Piano shows Andy’s fascination with the inner workings of a piano, making a futuristic psychedelic version of a piano that retains an organic, retro flow.
Charlotte Macmillan is also known as The Collagist, a multi-disciplinary artist with a preference for using thread and fabric. Charlotte creates subversively stitched outfits for performers such as Boy George, Coldplay and John Grant and designs bespoke stool tops for Design Pianos at The Piano Shop. With an interest in mixing up materials and methods Charlotte has recently been exploring digital print and laser cutting and has combined these with using her vintage Cornely chain stitcher to make the lantern quotes and Graffiti Piano stool top.
created the piano keys sculpture that has graced our windows since 2017 and, together with Jon Kelly, had the overarching vision for this latest installation: colour and music, beautiful materials, street art, graffiti and inspirational words that enable joyful, creative opportunities for local children. Julieann is known for her work as an artist and educator, as a lecturer at Bath School of Art, at the V&A London, as Creative Education Consultant to The Roche Court Educational Trust at the New Art Centre, Roche Court Sculpture Park and as Artist in Residence at Three Ways Special School in Bath.
