Steinway Model B Grand Piano Review

A Pianist’s Piano

Sometimes you play a piano that does everything you want and makes everything you play sound good. The recent addition of a restored Steinway Model B grand piano to The Piano Shop Bath provided me with an opportunity to have that very experience. Of course Steinway is a very illustrious name and is found in most concert halls around the world, and the list of artists who have used them reads like a who’s who of classical and popular music: Sergei Rachmaninoff, Vladimir Horowitz, Elton John, Billy Joel etc etc. So perhaps this might inform opinion on the piano manufacturer before a note is even played. However it should be mentioned that before making such a purchase it is highly recommended to try out pianos from the likes of Bluthner, Bosendorfer, Yamaha, Kawai, all of which are being used in concert halls by top artists as well.

Action and Touch

This is a review of the newly acquired Steinway Model B grand piano in our showroom. It was built in 1901 and is finished in French Polished Rosewood. The casing is in a traditional style, with an ornately carved music rest. As a restored model the strings and action are immaculate, with the wood polished to a highly pleasing finish.

If there is one thing that sticks out for Steinways it is consistency. Having played Steinways in other venues and at piano auctions, the quality of consistency always becomes apparent. Consistency of tone across the keyboard, with balanced bass and treble notes. This is exactly what I found when playing this piano. This is simply a beautifully crafted piano with excellent balance and refinement of tone across the whole instrument. The medium to light touch action allows for the tightest of playing and sensitivity when needed.
